Become a swimming instructor or water safety officer

Swimming instructors and water safety officers must have certain qualifications and clearances to get a job with us.

As part of the swim teacher qualification, you need to complete workplace training. We have training centres that provide a safe and nurturing environment for all trainees.

Complete your workplace training at one of our designated training centres. 

You will learn and experience the role of a swimming instructor in a positive, safe and supportive environment.

Work placements are generally 2 weeks, from Monday to Friday, between 9 am and 2 pm.

To complete your workplace training with us, you need to:

  • have attended the face-to-face workshop with your course provider
  • be at least 17 years old
  • have a current CPR qualification.

If you're over 18, you also need to have a current:

If you're under 18, you need to get a Working with Children Check after you complete workplace training. This makes you eligible for paid employment.

  1. Complete the Workplace training Term 4 application.
  2. Email the application form and copies of all relevant documents to interm-metro@education.wa.edu.au.
