Newton Moore Education Support Centre students have been developing essential life skills to better prepare them for life beyond school.
Year 11 and 12 students participated in The My Life, My Way Transition Workshop a dynamic two-day program that replaced their usual Community Work Centre placements.
Newton Moore Education Support Centre students have been learning how to prepare healthy meals.
Students participated in a thoughtfully curated program focused on building confidence, independence, and practical capabilities in a supportive and engaging environment.
Students worked with Red Cross Australia to develop professional presentation skills, collaborated with Jobs South West to create resumes and practise interview techniques, and engaged in personal development activities with Proudly Productive and the Community Access Squad.
They also enjoyed sessions run by local hair stylists who provided work-ready grooming tips and participated in an interactive cooking class that focused on preparing healthy, budget-friendly meals.
A highlight of the program was the Life Skills Olympics, a fun and fast-paced series of challenges that included the Egg-cellent Whisk Off, Carrot Peel Power, Laundry Sort Sprint, and the Tidy Tupperware Triumph.
These activities promoted teamwork, resilience, and a sense of accomplishment in a light-hearted, inclusive setting.
Parents and carers were invited to attend presentations that highlighted local community opportunities and support services, including an engaging session about youth volunteering facilitated by Volunteer South West.
The My Life, My Way Transition Workshop helps students develop essential life skills.
Their involvement underscored the importance of a strong collaboration between school and home in supporting student transitions.
“The My Life My Way transition workshops are in their second year. They build upon the embedded vocational learning we have in Years 10 to12,” said Newton Moore Education Support Centre principal Jo van der Plas.
“Providing these opportunities in our supportive environment ensures our young people have a voice in their future directions supported by known people.”
