Forty newly-appointed principals from across Western Australia recently completed the Department’s two-day residential induction program.

Now in its 11th cohort, the Newly Appointed Principal Induction Program supports principals in their first two years of leadership. The program strengthens understanding of key operational and management requirements, while also fostering a strong sense of connection across the education system.

This second 2025 cohort included 16 principals from North and South Metropolitan regions and 24 from regional areas.

Fiona McBeth, Principal Advisor at the Leadership Institute, said the program plays a vital role in helping new principals feel confident and connected.

“The feedback we consistently receive is that principals value the opportunity to connect with others who are on the same journey,” Ms McBeth said.

“It helps reduce feelings of isolation and imposter syndrome, and reinforces that they are part of a supportive, interconnected system.

“It’s also a chance for them to see the breadth of support available, from classroom to system level, and to understand how they can lead effectively within their unique school contexts.”

Newly appointed principal of Osborne Primary School, Ralmo Dias, said leadership today is about emotional intelligence, empathy, and balancing system demands with school needs.

“This program is a great opportunity to gain deeper insight into system expectations and processes, and to connect with others who are navigating similar challenges,” Mr Dias said.

Nicola Batten, newly appointed principal of Settlers Primary School said she was elated when she found out she was offered the role.

“The most exciting opportunity is being in the driver’s seat, making decisions that have the biggest impact on students, their families, and the community,” Ms Batten said.

“I started my education journey as a nurse. I then transitioned to teaching and my final placement was at Settlers Primary, and now I’ve come full circle as its principal.”

The Leadership Institute supports leadership development across all levels of the education system, from beginning teachers to experienced principals. Its programs focus on leadership capability, contextual alignment, and wellbeing, equipping leaders not only to manage their roles, but to thrive in them.
