From remote schools in the Kimberley, to a specialist agricultural college in the Wheatbelt, to bustling metro schools, the finalists for the WA Education Awards 2023 have been announced.

Twenty finalists are now in the running to be named cream of their crop for their outstanding efforts in ensuring WA students achieve their best and succeed in all areas of their education.

The WA Education Awards highlight the exceptional achievements, dedication and innovation happening at WA public schools, and celebrate the important role they play in shaping the lives of young people.

There are two new categories in this year's awards (Excellence in cultural responsiveness, and Excellence in disability and inclusion), bringing the total number of categories to five.

Wananami Remote Community School in the Kimberley and Brabham Primary School in Perth were both named finalist in two categories, Excellence in teaching and learning (primary) and Excellence in cultural responsiveness.

Wananami Remote Community School principal Nikki Sandilands said it was thrilling for the school to be named a finalist.

“It is a testament to the ongoing commitment of students, staff and community to work alongside one another, allowing our students to succeed as Ngarinyin people,” she said.

Brabham Primary School principal Anika Blackmore said being nominated in two categories was a significant moment in the school’s educational journey.

“These nominations are a reminder that our mission extends beyond the classroom, as we strive to create a bridge of understanding and respect between all members of our community,” she said.

“It is a privilege to be recognised for this work, and it serves as a symbol of the dedication and collaborative spirit of our passionate team of educators and whole school community.”

Winning schools will be announced in December and will receive $20,000 to go towards a project or program.

The WA Education Awards 2023 are sponsored by Lift Alliance, Edith Cowan University, Beilby Downing Teal and Seven West Media.
