Comet Bay College students got the chance to strut their stuff at Optus Stadium as they went back-to-back in the Eagles Schoolboys Cup.

The Eagles Schoolboys Cup is an interschool competition coordinated by the West Australian Football Commission for boys in Years 8 and 9, with the A-grade final staged at the state’s most prestigious venue in 2023.

The Comet Bay team defeated Sacred Heart College by 15 points in the Waalitj Division final last month to claim the trophy.

The tightly contested match was the curtain raiser before the West Coast Eagles’ round 24 AFL clash with Adelaide.

Both teams earned their spot in the grand final by going undefeated throughout the competition, with Comet Bay finishing on top in South Division and Sacred Heart topping the North Division.

“The boys stuck to the processes that are in place via our program and delivered consistent, focused and selfless efforts for each match that they were involved in,” coach Matthew Piggott said. “They were outstanding.”

As winners of the competition last year, Comet Bay has now claimed the Waalitj Division trophy in consecutive years.

It also caps off a trifecta of recent outstanding results for the Australian football specialist program, with the Comet Bay girls recently winning their second consecutive Freo Dockers Schoolgirls Cup and the school’s Year 7 boys taking the state title.

Comet Bay Australian football specialist program coordinator Stephen Thomson said he was proud of the students.

“The rewards for this work are obvious in the results and success of our students,” Mr Thomson said. “They have been simply brilliant in their performances, both individually, and as teams.”

In 2023, the competition celebrated its 40th year.
