These short-term appointments are generally between 5 and 10 weeks in schools with different needs, but can be shorter on occasion.
As a flying squad teacher, you will dive in from day one to captivate students. Your versatile skill set, deep understanding of the curriculum and effective classroom management strategies will position you well for any flying squad appointment.
You will receive free accommodation and travel to and from your appointment location. There are different categories of Teacher Flying Squad teachers.

| Relief teaching | Required to undertake duties at an agreed location, as directed. | Can accept or decline positions offered. |
| Allowances | Entitled to a dislocation allowance to the value of $16,500 per annum, paid fortnightly instead of any other allowances, provided in addition to base salary. | Individual school, locality and district allowances in addition to base salary, if applicable. |
| Appointment | 24-month fixed-term appointment with the Teacher Flying Squad. Successful completion may lead to appointment as a permanent teacher with the Department of Education. | Individual contracts with a public school. |
In addition to free accommodation, you will also receive any locality and school-specific allowances that apply to teaching staff at the school, as well as your teaching salary.
