Two prospective secondary teachers from regional WA are this year’s recipients of the Bob Hawke Aboriginal Teacher Scholarships.
Geraldton local Charlize Manado and Shaye Skraha, who completed her secondary studies in Bunbury, are the 2025 recipients.
Charlize Manado is completing a Bachelor of Education (Secondary).
The scholarship, awarded annually since 2020, provides financial support for two Aboriginal students who are studying to become teachers. It is named after former Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke, who was an advocate for Indigenous rights.
The scholarship’s objective is to boost the number of Aboriginal secondary school teachers, to foster culturally responsive learning environments in WA classrooms.
Charlize is completing a Bachelor of Education (Secondary) through CQ University at the Geraldton Universities Centre.
Shaye is enrolled in a Master of Teaching (Secondary) at the University of Western Australia after finishing a Bachelor of Sports Sciences and Exercise and Health, also at UWA.
She said the scholarship will enable her to stay in Perth to complete her studies.
“As my course is not offered in the South West, I am extremely grateful to receive the Bob Hawke Aboriginal Teacher Scholarship,” Miss Skraha said.
“As a teacher, I aim to promote healthy lifestyles whilst supporting students to reach their educational goals.
“I am fortunate I am able to combine my love for sport with shaping stronger futures for young learners.”
