Become a swimming instructor or water safety officer
Swimming instructors and water safety officers must have certain qualifications and clearances to get a job with us.
Swimming instructor requirements
To get a swimming instructor job with us, you must:
- be at least 17 years old
- have a current CPR certificate
- have a swimming instructor qualification
- have a Working with Children Check, or have applied for one
- have a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and screening clearance number if you're over 18.
We recognise these swimming instructor qualifications:
- AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety (TWS) Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety (TSW) accreditation
- Royal Life Saving WA Swim Teacher accreditation
- SWIM Coaches and Teachers Australia Swim Australia™ Teacher (SAT) qualification.
Once you complete the theory for your swimming instructor course, the next step is the practical component – your industry training.
You can complete your industry training at one of our venues through the Interm or VacSwim programs. It includes the supervised teaching component and competency assessment.
You will learn in a positive, supportive environment with mentoring from a coaching instructor or trainer.
Allow 2 weeks to complete your industry training. It’s competency-based and may take more or less time.
After you complete your industry training, register your qualifications and clearances.
To complete your industry training with us, you need to:
- have completed the online theory for your swimming instructor course
- be at least 17 years old
- have a current CPR qualification.
If you're over 18, you also need to have a current:
- Working with Children Check, or have applied for one
- Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and screening clearance number.
If you're under 18, you need to get a Working with Children Check after you complete industry training to be eligible for paid employment.
Gather evidence to show you meet the requirements. For example, digital copies of your qualification and clearances.

Water safety officer requirements
To get a water safety officer job with us, you must:
- be at least 17 years old
- have a Surf Bronze Medallion or Surf Rescue Certificate
- have a Working with Children Check, or have applied for one
- have a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and screening clearance number if you're over 18.
If you meet these requirements, the next step is to register your qualifications and clearances.
