Freedom of information
Freedom of Information gives the public a right to access government records. This includes records held by the Department or records that we have control of.
We gather and retain a variety of information. Our general approach is to provide access to information and documents as much as possible, however there are limitations to access and these are outlined in the Freedom of Information Act 1992.

Our Information Statement is an overview of our structure and functions, the kinds of information we hold, and the procedures to obtain information or have amendments made to information that is out of date, misleading or inaccurate.
You can request information outside of the formal Freedom of Information process. We call this direct release.
There are some categories of records that may not be appropriate to release for example:
- private or personal information of third parties
- legal professional privilege documents
- matters of Cabinet.
Personal information access for parents and students
Parents and students may access their own personal information:
- once the school principal has confirmed their identity
- there is no reason to withhold the records, such as court orders.
Information about third parties is removed before release.
If you are a current student or a parent of a current student, please contact the school directly for the information you need.
Former students and authorised third parties acting on behalf of former students must lodge their request in writing. Use the Former Student Application for Access to Documents to lodge your request.
Before you apply
You might not need to make a Freedom of Information request to get the information you need. We prefer direct release (where information is given freely). The Freedom of Information process is the last resort.
If you decide to apply for Freedom of Information contact information release support. We will guide you through the process. If you wish to lodge a Freedom of Information application it must be in writing. Use the FOI application form to lodge your request.
