With new and upgraded STEM, sports, music and performing arts facilities, Kelmscott Senior High School students are now more prepared to succeed in the modern world.
Principal Mark Jeffery, teachers and students celebrate the opening of the school’s new sports hall.
A new sports hall, dedicated music room, STEM facility and performing arts centre, totalling $12.3 million in upgrades, were recently unveiled.
The sports hall is already being used for basketball, volleyball, rock climbing, athletics, assemblies and community use activities. It also includes a fitness centre, toilets, change rooms and staff areas.
“The new sports hall is an impressive facility that has lifted the morale of students, staff and community,” said Mark Jeffery, principal.
The upgrade project has also transformed an existing learning space into a STEM facility that houses the school’s burgeoning robotics program. Access to this innovative resource is helping STEM staff and students take on more complex and sophisticated tasks.
Students now have access to a dedicated music room.
The old school gym has been refurbished and reimagined as a performing arts centre. The modern space includes a shared drama and dance studio, green rooms and a dedicated entry with kitchenette.
“Rehearsals are underway and our major mid-year and end-of-year performances will occur in the new performing arts centre,” said Mr Jeffery.
“We used to have to go off site for those performances, so we are very pleased to be able to run them in-house.”
Other refurbishment work has resulted in a dedicated music centre with practice and ensemble rooms.
The robotics program has a home in the new STEM facility.
The facilities, which were designed by Armstrong Collective Architects and constructed by PS Structures Pty Ltd, have made an immediate impact on the school community.
“The physical environment is as important for student achievement as outstanding teaching,” said Mr Jeffery.
“The new facilities have made the students, staff and community feel seen, heard and valued, which ensures a sense of pride and commitment to our learning and work at the school.”
