More than 150 students from 10 different schools attended an event at Southern River College last term to explore future opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
An astrophysicist, a robotics show and discussions about exploding stars, the Milky Way and blackholes, certainly gave them something to think about.

Students took part in a special STEM event at Southern River College.
The event, supported by Schools Plus, in partnership with Google, was designed to spark curiosity and ambition in the next generation of technology leaders.
This is the second event in a national five-part series, which started in 2024 and runs until 2026.
Students from the STEM and robotics program at Southern River College led an engaging robotics show, and spoke with special guest and astrophysicist, Dr Adelle Goodwin.
Dr Goodwin discussed how stars are destroyed by supermassive blackholes, found at the centre of nearly every large galaxy, including the Milky Way.
John Townley, Specialist Robotics Teacher from Southern River College, expressed his gratitude for the event.
“Our Google activity day was very exciting for all local school students and aligned perfectly with the Southern River College focus on developing future ready skills for students,” Mr Townley said.

Students learnt about robotics and other STEM related fields.
“The insights students gained from guests included fascinating stories about how they came to be doing their amazing work.
“Some of the questions asked by our younger students showed deep curiosity and excitement about possible futures they can have in STEM careers.
“We are very grateful for the support of Schools Plus and Google in making our dream come true.”
Marie Efstathiou, from Google.org Australia, was excited to introduce this project to students at Southern River College.
“Google.org believes in building a strong digital future for Australia, and that means making sure all students have the chance to learn and grow their digital skills,” she said.
“We're thrilled to partner with Schools Plus on this project, bringing role models and real-world examples from Australia's science and technology industry right to Southern River College.
“We want to show students that a career in STEM is totally within reach. Seeing is believing, and we're here to inspire them.”
