To find out how a Leap course can qualify you to teach in another learning area, register your interest.
Through Department-funded training and support, the Leap program supports new and existing teachers to gain further qualifications, expand their teaching skills and explore new career opportunities in Western Australian public schools.
The program provides an opportunity for:
- primary teachers to train in teaching secondary students
- secondary teachers to train in another learning area.
You can apply to complete a graduate certificate or a short course (micro-credential).
You will be supported with course fees and course materials. If you teach in a public school, you may be eligible for reimbursement for travel and accommodation. Your school will also receive relief reimbursement.
Take the leap: Grace’s journey from primary teaching to design and technology
In the following video, meet Grace, a primary school teacher who is currently studying design and technology through the Leap program.
Grace shares her experience applying for Leap, from finding out about the program through word of mouth to getting her principal’s approval and starting her studies. She also talks about the support she received from the Leap Program team throughout the process.
These courses are accredited postgraduate university qualifications studied part-time over 12 months. These courses are designed for teachers new to, or who have some experience in, the learning area. We offer graduate certificate courses based on demand and our areas of need.
Current courses available are in lower secondary:
- education support
- early childhood education
- design and technology
- mathematics
- English
- humanities and social sciences
- Japanese language.
These micro-credential courses run for between 1 and 4 weeks and are for teachers with extensive content knowledge. You may have an undergraduate qualification in the subject area. At the end of the course, we will recognise you as qualified to teach in the subject area.
Our micro-credentials may include:
- mathematics – Year 7 to 8
- mathematics – methods
- mathematics – specialist
- science – lower secondary
- physics – upper secondary
- chemistry – upper secondary.
