Public school life

The start of a new school year brings many firsts. For many, it’s their first day of Kindergarten. For many more, it’s their first day in a new classroom, or school.

We looked around our schools to find out more about what staff and students are experiencing on the first day of the 2026 school year.

First day as a teacher

While classrooms of students are starting school for the first time, day 1 also marks the first day of school for many graduate teachers.

Among them is Dani Rolfe, who is beginning her career as a graduate teacher at Ashdale Secondary College.

Ms Rolfe said she was excited about starting her role.

“I'm looking forward to stepping into my role as a teacher and making a positive impact on my students,” she said.

“I want to create a classroom that feels safe, welcoming and supportive so all students can learn.”

First day of Kindergarten

There are an expected 23,490 students starting Kindergarten across WA this week.

Five schools are celebrating a Kindergarten milestone, with the free Full-time Kindergarten Pilot starting today.

The pilot is starting at Roleystone Community College, Halidon Primary School and Banksia Grove Primary School in the metropolitan region, and South Kalgoorlie Primary School and Dalyellup Primary School in regional WA.

First day of secondary school

Avery Shudra is one of the thousands of Year 7 students starting their first day of high school in 2026

Avery Shudra is one of the thousands of Year 7 students starting their first day of high school in 2026.

Avery has been accepted into the marine studies program at Ocean Reef Senior High School.

“I’m most looking forward to transitioning from class to class and being given more responsibility,” she said.

“I can’t wait to learn about the science behind marine animals and the ocean, and go snorkelling.

“I’m excited to learn all the new tools to help me become an adult and to launch my career.

“I’ll be in extension maths and science and was invited to try the classes before I start which I loved, so I am excited to do those two subjects next year!”

First day at a new school

Two new schools opened their doors for the first time today, Wungong Primary School in Hilbert, and Sunrise Primary School in Wellard.

Both Sunrise Primary School and Wungong Primary School cater for students from Kindergarten to Year 6, meeting the needs of their growing communities.
