Joondalup Education Support Centre, excellence in disability and inclusion

Joondalup Education Support Centre offers a range of programs shaped to each child’s individual needs and abilities.

The school’s specialised and dedicated staff are dedicated to equipping students with disabilities with the academic and social skills needed to help them thrive – inside and outside of the school environment.

Technology plays a significant role in the school’s goal to enhance student learning. This is supported by a quality STEM education program.

School staff also run several extra-curricular activities specifically designed for students with disabilities, including running, gardening, music, craft, after-school sports and a breakfast club.

School Board Chairperson, Hwee Peng Tan, says an example of the school’s commitment to inclusivity is the range of perspectives on its school board, which includes neurodivergent members.

“The board is made up of parents, community members and staff to ensure the best possible outcomes for all,” he said.

Another example of its commitment is the school’s partnership with Joondalup Primary School, which it shares a campus with. They have worked together to build an inclusive ‘one campus, with two schools’ community that students, staff and parents value.

They also use a ‘buddy system’ with some combined assemblies, learning areas, excursions, incursions, recess and lunch periods, and sporting carnivals.

“The staff are driven by their goal to provide a quality educational experience to all students,” Hwee Peng said.

“Strong parent satisfaction is a vital indicator of the school’s success and its commitment to relationship-building and learning for all.”

In the school’s most recent parent survey, 95% of respondents said they’d recommend the school and 100% said it was well-led.

This award acknowledges schools that demonstrate excellence in meeting the diverse needs of students, parents, families and communities.
