Contaminated sand product recall
You may have seen reports about an ACCC product safety recall for coloured sand that may contain asbestos, which has now been reported as a very low level of risk to health.
The Department has been communicating regularly with our schools to ensure they have the support they need to respond to this issue.
Please be assured that our schools have implemented all recommended actions and, as an extra precaution, applied them to all coloured sand on site:
- All schools have stopped using all coloured sand products and the products have been stored in secure locations.
- Removal of the products from schools is being managed by the Department of Housing and Works and is currently underway.
- Principals have been asked to send a communication to all families about the recall.
There is a very low level of risk, and health advice is that people who may have come into contact with the recalled products do not need to seek medical advice.
Workplace settings, including schools and childcare centres, are advised to follow the advice from the State’s work, health and safety agency, WorkSafe WA.
If you find this product in your home, please refer to the product safety recall for all consumers. There are multiple coloured sand products on the ACCC website.
You can also find interim advice from the Environmental Health Standing Committee (enHealth) of the Australian Health Protection Committee.
You may feel like you need further information:
- You can find the latest information about the recall notice on the ACCC website.
- If you have any questions about health concerns you can call the Department of Health on (08) 9222 4222.
We will provide updates if further information becomes available.
