Reward and recognition

Department of Education stalwart John Marrapodi PSM OAM was recognised on the Australia Day 2026 Honours List, marking the second consecutive year his commitment to service has been acknowledged at a national level.

The Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) is awarded for service worthy of particular recognition.

This year’s honour recognises John’s contribution to the community beyond his role within the Department, as manager of Infrastructure Operations, highlighting his long-standing service to Australian rules football as an umpire. John enjoyed a career as a senior umpire and was an umpire’s coach with the WAFL for three decades.

John was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his service as an Australian rules football goal umpire.

The recognition follows his inclusion on last year’s Honours List, where he received a Meritorious Award for his work in emergency and security management within the Department’s Infrastructure Operations team.

The Public Service Medal (PSM), for public service employees, is awarded to those who have given outstanding public service.

Reflecting on the recognition, John said he was proud and humbled to have been nominated, let alone receiving an honour for a second year.

With experience spanning both public service and community involvement, John believes the skills and values developed through his approach within the Department of Education strengthen his service outside the workplace.

“Giving back to the community doesn’t have to be something separate from your professional life. If anything, it can complement and even strengthen your career,” he said.

He also encouraged others to consider giving back in ways that align with their interests and values.

“If this recognition inspires even one person to look for ways to help, mentor, support, or engage with their community, then it becomes far more meaningful.”
