Reward and recognition

A Year 12 student from Kalamunda Senior High School won the Out of This World Talent: Mission Patch Design Competition for 2025 - 2026.

Jasmine Barton’s unique patch design was selected from more than 2,500 entries from students across 87 public schools in Western Australia. Her artwork was inspired by real space missions and showed a deep understanding of space exploration and design.

The winning design which will be turned into a embroidered patch.

“I have always loved and been very interested in space,” Jasmine said.

“When I first heard about this competition, I was so excited because it was a chance to combine my passion and love of space and space exploration, and my love of art.”

Jasmine’s design was influenced by the STS-27 mission patch and featured bright colours which give the impression of a rainbow using only red, orange, yellow, and blue. She also drew inspiration from the look of crew capsules and the rocky surface of Mars.

Her win is being celebrated by her whole class, who now get to attend the Western Australian Space Science Education Centre’s (WASSEC) popular Mission to Mars program.

Jasmine’s design will also be brought to life as the official embroidered patch for WASSEC space suits, as well as stickers for all student participants in the Mission to Mars program.

Jasmine Barton was excited to learn that her design won.

“Finding out I’d won the competition felt amazing! I was ecstatic and so excited, I couldn’t believe it!” Jasmine said.

Jasmine has already taken big steps towards a future in the space industry. She has been on work experience, having joined the Stargirls+ STEM camp with ICRAR, and attended the BINAR-X holiday program.

She’s now looking forward to the hands-on experience at WASSEC. The experience includes exploring Mars-like geology, using a mission control room, and performing lab research.
