Languages programs

Children with a passion and commitment to learning a second language have the opportunity to develop their skills to an advanced level, develop an appreciation and understanding of culture and enjoy a dynamic and challenging learning environment.

Specialist teachers, supported by native speaking assistants and tutors, develop children's comprehension, spoken interaction and writing skills to extend their knowledge and use of cultural norms and practices. There are also opportunities to participate in overseas tours and exchange programs.

Potential languages include:

  • Chinese (Mandarin)
  • French
  • German
  • Italian
  • Japanese.

Children can continue to study a language they started in primary school or choose a new language when they enter in Year 7. Prior learning in the specific language at secondary school in Years 7 and 8 is required for Year 9 entry.

There is no entry point for Year 10 onwards.

Selection is based on the combined results of the Academic Selective Entrance Test (ASET) and an interview. An applicant's score in the ASET will determine whether they will qualify for the interview stage. Not all applicants will be invited to an interview.

As the program varies from school to school, please visit the school’s website or contact the school for more details and to find out which languages are offered at each school.
