Review of the School Education Act 1999

The Cook Government has announced a comprehensive review of the School Education Act 1999 to strengthen disability support for students.

The review will commence in the first quarter of 2024 and will involve a comprehensive stakeholder consultation process.

The review aims to strengthen access, inclusion, and services within the public education system and meet the current needs of children with disabilities, their families, and the schools across Western Australia.

Professor Andrew Whitehouse, an autism expert from the Telethon Kids Institute, will provide guidance during the review.

The initiative acknowledges the evolving landscape since the Act's introduction in 1999 and emphasises the commitment to fostering a more inclusive and supportive educational environment.

The review will address various aspects, including participation, recognition, enrolment, equity, rights, and attitudes towards young people with disabilities.

With Professor Whitehouse's expertise, the goal is to develop strategies that not only safeguard the education of students with disabilities but also strengthen the provision of ongoing access, inclusion, and services.
