Phonics Initiative

The Phonics Initiative plays an important role in strengthening the quality of teaching and learning in Western Australian public schools. The initiative supports schools through effective, evidence based phonics instruction and assessment.

Phonics is an essential component of literacy learning and works in combination with:

• oral language
• phonological awareness
• fluency
• vocabulary
• comprehension.

Together, these components support children to become confident readers, spellers and writers. Strong literacy skills are essential as students progress through school, further education and participation in the workforce.
