All students who sit the Academic Selective Entrance Test (ASET) will receive their ASET Performance Report by email in early June.

Academic Selective Entrance Test (ASET)

The ASET has 4 separate tests. Each test looks at different skills, such as:

  • working scientifically
  • thinking mathematically
  • reading for analysis
  • thinking in writing.

The test is designed to be challenging. It is extremely rare for any student to achieve the highest possible score on any test.

All test questions are carefully trialled and reviewed to help identify students who are best suited to Gifted and Talented programs.

The ASET is different to school‑based tests and NAPLAN

The ASET is designed to assess how students think and apply skills, rather than what they have been taught in the classroom. Questions often require students to solve unfamiliar problems, apply strategies, and show complex thinking.

Because the test is taken only by students who have applied for selective programs, results are compared against a group of high‑performing students. This means scores reflect both the difficulty of the test and the strong overall performance of the student group.

Reading the ASET Performance Report

Example ASET Performance Report

Your child’s ASET Performance Report will be emailed to the email address or addresses listed on the application.

The report shows:

  • your child’s standardised score for each of the four tests
  • your child’s Total Standard Score (TSS)
  • the highest score achieved by any student in each test that year.
Standardised scores

Standardised scores compare your child’s results with all students who sat the test.

  • All 4 tests are worth the same amount.
  • Scores are not percentages or percentiles.
Total Standard Score (TSS)

The TSS is the total of the 4 standardised scores.

The TSS is used in the ranking of students for program offers.

How programs use the TSS
Academic programs
  • Placement in academic programs is based only on the TSS.
  • A minimum TSS of 209.5 is required to be considered.
  • A score of 209.5 or higher does not guarantee an offer.
  • Some schools receive many more preferences than places and which creates higher scores.
  • Students are ranked from highest to lowest TSS.
  • Offers are made from the highest score until places are filled or no more eligible students remain.
Languages programs
  • Your child’s TSS determines eligibility for a Languages interview.
  • Final placement is based on both the TSS and interview score.
Arts programs
  • No minimum TSS is required for Arts programs.
  • Selection may be based on the ASET and additional program-specific assessments.

Minimum entrance scores

Minimum entrance scores show the lowest score that received an offer in previous years, after all offers were completed.

These scores:

  • are a guide only
  • may change every year
  • are usually lower than Round 1 or Round 2 offer scores.

Minimum scores for Year 7 entry in 2027 will only be known at the end of the 2026 placement process.

Note:

  • This information applies to Year 7 only.
  • Programs marked ‘ALT’ were approved for a lower benchmark due to low student numbers.
  • For entry into older year levels, we do not publish previous minimum entrance scores. This is because there are very few available places, and scores can vary greatly from year to year, so no clear trend can be shown.

Change preferences

After you receive your child’s ASET Performance Report, you will have 7 days to request limited changes to preferences.

You may:

  • change the order of preferences
  • remove preferences
  • replace preferences (rules apply below).
Important rules
  • Arts programs can only be added if your child completed the required testing.
  • Languages programs must be added by Friday 22 May 2026 to be considered for Round 1.
  • Languages added after this date will be considered in Round 2 only.

For more information, refer to the key dates and application guidelines.

To request a preference change contact us by phone 9264 4307 or email gtsu@education.wa.edu.au

Request a results check

You have 7 days from the release of the Performance Report to request a results check. Submit your results check request by the deadline we provide in our email to you. To submit a request, complete and follow the instructions on the ASET results check request form.

Before requesting a check note:

  • all ASET scores are already checked multiple times
  • errors are rare
  • lower than expected results are usually due to the high difficulty of the test and the strong overall performance of the student group.

What a results check includes:

  • checking student data matches the test
  • manual checking of multiple-choice answers
  • review of the writing test by the chief marking supervisor.

Results checks:

  • are free
  • cannot be cancelled once submitted
  • may result in a score being raised or lowered.

If a score changes:

  • a higher score may be considered in Round 2
  • a lower score may cause an existing offer to be withdrawn.

Results checks cannot be used for illness or misadventure claims. These must be submitted within 7 days of the test date.

Make preference change requests by phone or in writing to 9264 4307 or gtsu@education.wa.edu.au.
