Academic programs

Children with exceptional academic ability can take part in specialised programs designed to meet their advanced learning needs.

How the program supports learning

These programs provide a learning environment where students are encouraged to think deeply, solve complex problems and explore ideas in greater detail. Learning is adjusted to suit each student and may move at a faster pace, with more in-depth content than the regular curriculum.

Where the program is available

The programs are available at selected public secondary schools across Western Australia, including metropolitan schools, regional schools and an online option. This allows families in different locations to access the program.

How the program is delivered

Most programs have a single class of 32 students but may have a double class of up to 64. Selected students attend the school full time and are grouped with other Gifted and Talented program students in the 4 core academic subjects of English, Maths, Science and Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS). For other subjects, students are timetabled with students from the wider school population.

Online academic program

Students in the online academic program attend a public regional high school and typically study either Maths and Science or English and HASS with their online Gifted and Talented program cohort, replacing their usual classes. There is the potential to do both streams in later years.

Learning is delivered by specialist teachers at Perth Modern School as live online lessons combined with independent study. Perth Modern School is fully selective, so all classes will be taken with Gifted and Talented program students.

Beyond the classroom

Students have opportunities to learn beyond the classroom. Depending on the school, this may include:

  • academic competitions
  • leadership activities
  • community involvement
  • university‑based learning
  • study experiences.
How students are selected

Students are offered a place in the program based on their results in the Academic Selective Entrance Test (ASET).

Our online program is available for regional students who live outside the Bunbury or Albany region.
