Languages interview
Languages interview
To be considered for a languages program place, your child must sit the Academic Selective Entrance Test (ASET). They may also be invited to attend a languages interview.
Interview eligibility and preferences
An invitation to attend a languages interview is based on:
- your child's ASET results
- the languages program selected as a preference.
We will only consider students who have included a languages program in their preferences for the interview.
Purpose of the interview
The languages interview allows your child to show their interest in learning a second language and their willingness to take part in the program.
Languages programs are for students who are learning the language as a second language and who do not have a cultural background in that language.
Year 7 entry
Students applying for Year 7 entry:
- require no previous language study or experience
- are not required to show language knowledge or skills
- may indicate a language they are interested in, but this is not guaranteed
- will study language as beginners.
Year 9 entry – prior learning requirement
If your child is applying for a languages program in Year 9, they must have studied the same language in Years 7 and 8 to be considered for placement.
Parents and carers are encouraged to contact the relevant school before finalising preferences to:
- confirm which languages are available
- discuss whether their child's prior language study meets program requirements.
