East Perth Primary School (planning name)

East Perth Primary School (planning name)

The development of the new school is an exciting initiative that will greatly benefit local families and support the community into the future.

We will build a new public primary school in East Perth to grow the East Perth community while reducing enrolment pressure at Highgate Primary School. It will serve families living in East Perth, Northbridge and Perth's central business district for years to come.

The school will open for Term 1 2029 for Kindergarten to Year 6 students.

Future students will enjoy modern facilities that support teaching and learning. It will have a unique vertical design that is purpose-built to meet the needs of all students and maximise the location's potential with its proximity to Queens Gardens, the WA Cricket Association (WACA) ground and the river.

There will be state-of-the-art learning areas and spaces for play in a design that is accessible for all students. With opportunities beyond traditional functions and shared-use facilities, it's set to become ‘more than a school’ and a hub of the community.

The project includes:

  • the construction of a vertical school of up to 4 storeys to accommodate 600 students
  • grass and composite playing fields
  • a sports hall
  • outdoor learning areas and terraces.

The new primary school is part of the state government’s plan to build a more vibrant city of Perth.

Construction has started on East Perth Primary School (planning name), marking an exciting milestone.

The site is now enclosed by protective hoarding that’s been enlivened with artwork by local Aboriginal artists, creating an engaging streetscape during construction.

Over the coming weeks, the site will be cleared and prepared for building. Care will be taken to protect the environment, including the existing native trees.

Once this phase is completed, construction will then move to earthworks and retaining walls. This will shape the site and lay the groundwork of a modern learning space to serve the East Perth community for years to come.

Closure of Queens Gardens Carpark

In preparation for the start of onsite works, the two sections of the Queens Gardens Carpark operated by the Department on a no-fee basis since November 2024 are now permanently closed.

To support access to the area, the State Government is investing in transport options, including:

  • CAT bus services
  • frequent bus routes along Adelaide Terrace connecting East Perth to major train stations
  • improved walking and cycling infrastructure, including the new Boorloo Bridge
  • free public transport on Sundays for SmartRider users
  • two-zone fare cap across the Transperth network
