Reward and recognition

Vasse Primary School staff and students clucked with excitement as one of their own got to strut her stuff in Australia’s Next Top Chicken.

Australian Next Top Chicken hosted by aviary specialists The Goodlife Backyard, showcases backyard chickens and roosters from across the nation. The event celebrates all kinds of breeds, quirks, and talents from fluffy bantams to striking roosters.

Apple Pie was nominated for Australia’s Next Top Chicken.

Education assistant Kylie Van Ranzow, who runs the Chicken Club at the school, said entering Miss Apple Pie in the competition was a wonderful opportunity to share their story with the wider community.

“It’s a fun and meaningful way to showcase the incredible social and emotional benefits our chickens bring to students at Vasse Primary School,” Ms Van Ranzow said.

Miss Apple Pie is one of the original Chicken Club hens and is a standout due to her sassiness.

“Miss Apple Pie may be the smallest in the flock, but she’s full of personality. She sings, struts, and sneaks into classrooms for cuddles. She’s always had star power,” Ms Van Ranzow said.

“When I saw the Australia’s Next Top Chicken competition, she immediately came to mind.

“She’s photogenic in her tutus, loves going for walks on her lead, and most importantly, she was the one who started it all.”

Even though Miss Apple Pie didn’t win the competition, there was still a buzz of excitement among the school community. Past students, current families, and staff all rallied together, voting daily and cheering her on. It brought the whole school community together.

Vasse Primary School is home to the Chicken Club.

Ms Van Ranzow started the Chicken Club after seeing how the feathered friends helped bring students together.

“Our chickens help students build responsibility, empathy, and confidence and the best part is, it all comes through caring connections. It’s learning that truly sticks.”

“What began as a little idea to help students at lunchtime has grown into something truly meaningful. Chicken Club gives students a place to belong.”
