Atwell College earns national honour

Atwell College was recently crowned Special Education School of the Year at the 2026 Australian Education Awards.

The national awards celebrate the outstanding work of educators across Australia, recognising the impact they have on students, schools and communities.

Principal Darren Payton said it was an extraordinary achievement to have the school’s education support team recognised on a national stage.

“[It was] a significant acknowledgement of the quality of work undertaken at Atwell College,” Mr Payton said.

“The award recognises the team's unwavering commitment to inclusion, personalised support, strong partnerships with families and their relentless focus on ensuring every student has the opportunity to thrive.

“This award is a proud moment for our school community and a testament to the dedication, professionalism and care demonstrated by our exceptional education support team every day.”

Atwell College won the award for the staff’s continued work to build an inclusive, student‑centred school culture. They have a strong focus on disability and inclusive education to ensure every student is known, valued and supported to succeed.

Mr Payton said staff use high‑quality inclusive education practices and consistently demonstrate a deep care for students and a strong belief in what they can achieve.

“What makes this achievement particularly special is that it reflects work that is often undertaken quietly behind the scenes,” he said.

“Every day, our education assistants, teachers, therapists and support staff advocate for students, build meaningful relationships and create opportunities that genuinely change lives.

“We are incredibly proud of what they have achieved and thankful for the opportunity to celebrate this success on a national stage.”

Mosman Park School of Deaf Children, Joseph Banks Secondary College and Wattle Grove Primary School were all finalists in this year’s awards.
