Students can win some of the thousands of dollars in prizes that are up for grabs each week of Term 3, just by being active.

The Education Minister’s Running Challenge is back for a third year, starting today, Monday 21 July.

Running until Friday 19 September, the challenge invites Western Australian students and education staff to develop active habits for the chance to win prizes.

Last year, more than 8,500 students participated, from across the state, with more than 60,000 activities logged.

The fitness initiative encourages participants to run, walk, cycle, scoot, or engage in wheelchair activity over the next nine weeks.

Primary school students are required to complete 200 minutes of activity throughout the challenge, while secondary students and education staff must complete a total of 300 minutes.

Weekly prizes are drawn randomly from those who log activities.

Education Minister, Sabine Winton MLA, is enthusiastic about the multi-dimensional positive impacts of the initiative.

“We know physical activity helps to improve students’ academic performance, brain health, fitness and mental wellbeing, which are all key to positive learning outcomes,” she said.

Participants who log their activities each week also contribute to their school’s chances of winning end-of-challenge major prizes.

Select runners who complete the challenge and log their activities also receive free entry into the Perth Running Festival Burswood Park 4km Dash on Sunday 12 October, at Optus Stadium.
