A recent Department of Education Graduate Teacher Career Evening provided pre-service and graduate teachers the chance to connect with Department staff and learn more about work opportunities across Western Australia.

Director General Jay Peckitt spoke to the pre-service and graduate teachers in attendance.

The event provided prospective teachers with information about key steps on beginning a teaching career, including how to apply for teaching positions, teacher registration requirements, regional employment opportunities and available pathways into the profession.

For attendees, such as university students Kate and Keely, the evening was an opportunity to get ahead of their future careers.

“We have come tonight to get to know how to apply for jobs in the future and see where we're headed in our career,” Kate said.

Fellow pre-service teacher Keely was keen to learn more about teacher registration and opportunities outside the metropolitan area.

“I’m really just wanting some information on my registration and some more information on potential regional jobs,” she said.

Keely also took the opportunity to find out more about the Flying Teacher Squad, which supports teachers working in regional and remote communities.

For Kai, the evening was about making connections and gaining a better understanding of the teaching profession.

“It’s a great opportunity to meet new people, to learn about the industry, to get a different perspective,” Kai said.

Attendees were able to gain advice during one on one sessions.

The event also attracted people who are taking a less traditional pathway into teaching.

Carolina is completing her third degree after studying marine biology and sport science. Her experience working with children through youth camps, counselling and dance teaching helped inspire her move towards a career in education.

“I thought, you know, I think working with kids is the way to go,” she said.

With information, advice and opportunities to connect with people working across the Department, the evening gave aspiring teachers a chance to take the next step towards a rewarding career in public education.

For many attendees, it was a chance to leave with greater confidence, new connections and a clearer idea of where their teaching journey could take them.
