Reward and recognition

Comet Bay College Year 11 student, Charlie Fletcher, was named in the All-Australian team following a sensational campaign at the 2025 Marsh AFL National Development Championships – Under 16 Girls.

Charlie was also crowned WA’s Most Valuable Player after averaging 23 disposals and seven tackles across two matches.

Charlie Fletcher was named WA’s Most Valuable Player.

The 16-year-old midfielder, who plays in the WAFLW for Peel Thunder, impressed selectors with her dominant performances and fierce commitment throughout the national tournament.

“It was pretty amazing,” Charlie said of the All-Australian honour.

“I will be in my draft year in two years, and I know this is definitely what I want to do. I hope to be selected in the State 18s next year.

“I know there are eyes on me, and it’s a little daunting, but it’s all paying off because this is where I want to go.”

Charlie, who balances training twice a week with Peel Thunder and playing on weekends, credits her parents for their unwavering support.

“Ever since I was little, they have been at every game and drive me to all my training sessions each week,” she said.

“Recently they flew me across the country to be part of the state squad. They’ve been amazing and I couldn’t do it all without them.”

Charlie’s talent and leadership have long been recognised at Comet Bay College, where she is a key member of the AFL Specialist Program.

Program Coordinator Steve Thomson said, “We were thrilled for her – and it was really no surprise!

“Charlie is clearly one of the best female footballers in the state. She performs outstandingly. We see it every day, so it was a well-deserved honour.”

Beyond her athletic ability, Charlie’s influence is also felt across the school community.

“Charlie is a great school leader who conducts herself outstandingly in everything she does. She’s an all-round great kid and a really good role model for her peers,” Mr Thomson said.

“She plays beyond her years, and is certain to have a bright future.”

Charlie’s Peel teammate, Tiama Collard, and West Perth’s Arybella Nelson, also made the All-Australian side, selected after the carnival, where WA finished third in its pool.
