Broome Primary School students took to the streets in the annual Shinju Matsuri float parade to celebrate their school’s 125th anniversary.

Broome Primary School’s float won the Schools and Children award.

Shinju Matsuri is one of Broome’s major annual events, celebrating the town’s rich pearling heritage and vibrant multicultural identity.

The float parade wound through the streets of Broome’s Chinatown area in late August, with spectators lining the route to enjoy the colourful and creative displays from 23 floats.

Daryl Mansfield, Broome Primary School principal, said it was a very proud day for the school community.

“As the oldest established public school in the Kimberley, Broome Primary School was proud to showcase our 125-year milestone,” he said.

“Our school community came together in spectacular fashion, with more than 150 students, staff and families proudly participating in the parade.”

Broome Primary School’s float won the Schools and Children award, which came with a $500 prize.

Mr Mansfield said it was a true team effort.

“Students from Pre-primary to Year 6 contributed to the colourful artwork and signage decorating the trailer, making the float a wonderful representation of our school community,” he said.

Celebrations continued into the afternoon with presentations and entertainment, featuring many talented students from the Broome Cluster of Independent Public Schools.
