Willetton Senior High School science teacher Nathan Curnow has been named STEM Educator of the Year (Schools) at the Premier’s Science Awards, recognising his outstanding impact on science education in Western Australia.

Mr Curnow was nominated for his leadership and influence across local, state and national levels, as well as his creative approach to inspiring students.

“I was nominated for my impact and leadership across a range of contexts which help me engage, inspire and develop future leaders in science and STEM,” he said.  

“I use creativity to inspire students, and I am passionate about connecting them with expert scientist role models and their stories to feed their aspirations as our next generation of STEM professionals.” 

Mr Curnow said he felt fortunate to be recognised for his impact. 

“I’m excited and honoured to be a finalist (for the second time) amongst such esteemed colleagues representing our profession,” he said.   

“I feel very fortunate to be recognised for my impact.” 

A dynamic educator known for embracing creativity as a powerful tool in STEM, Mr Curnow blends real-world science with hands-on learning and ensures students see that STEM careers are within reach.  

Colleagues describe him as a tireless leader who brings energy, innovation and a strong sense of purpose to every project. 

At the heart of his work is a commitment to helping young people recognise their potential.  

“As an educator, I am passionate about helping students see themselves as future scientists and problem-solvers and inspiring them to get involved and have their own impact,” Mr Curnow said. 

His win is a celebration of his radical excellence and the meaningful difference he continues to make both in his classroom and in shaping the next generation of STEM leaders in Western Australia.
