Students shine in Solar Car Challenge

Students across Western Australia recently showcased their STEM prowess in the exciting Synergy Solar Car Challenge.

The challenge, a joint initiative between Synergy, and the Science Teachers’ Association of WA, saw enthusiastic Year 6 and 8 students design and construct their own solar-powered vehicles. 

The challenge provided an excellent platform for students to learn about energy, battery technology, and engineering principles. With their creativity and ingenuity, teams raced against each other in seven thrilling events held across Perth, Albany, Bunbury, Collie, Geraldton, and Kalgoorlie. 

Some schools placed first in their district: 

Albany 

• Mount Barker Community College’s Year 8 team.   
• Little Grove Primary School’s Year 6 team. 

Kalgoorlie 

• North Kalgoorlie Primary School’s Year 6 team  

Geraldton  

• Champion Bay Senior High School’s Year 8 team. 
• Dongara District High School’s Year 6 team, while their Year 8 team finished second. 

Science teacher Jane Ganfield, from Dongara District High School, said the whole school community was proud of her student’s efforts.  

“The Synergy Solar Car competition was such a great day, and I was really excited and elated that our students did so well,” she said.  

“Both of our teams displayed great sportsmanship, awesome problem-solving skills and excellent teamwork.”
