Dr London has the formula for STEM success

Balga Senior High School STEM teacher-in-charge Dr Roslyn London has been named STEM Educator of the Year (Schools) in the Premier's Science Awards 2026.

Now in its 25th year, the Premier’s Science Awards celebrate outstanding scientific research, education and engagement in Western Australia. 

Dr London was recognised for her work helping students build STEM skills through real-world problem-solving, competitive challenges and connections with industry. 

She creates opportunities for students to develop technical and enterprise skills they can apply beyond the classroom.  

Drawing on her own experience of disrupted education and learning English as an additional language, Dr London is passionate about creating an inclusive learning environment where students feel supported to succeed. 

“For me, this honour isn't just about my work. It's a celebration of our students. It validates the environment Balga Senior High School has built where students learn by doing, embrace mistakes, and see STEM as essential life skills for their future,” Dr Londan said.  

“More than anything, this spotlight belongs to the resilience, curiosity, and hard work of my students. To have their effort acknowledged at this level is a privilege. 

“Winning this award validates my ideas that with the right support and opportunities, all students, no matter their background or life experience, can succeed and get a glimpse of their own potential. Students don't just learn STEM, they build life skills that motivate them to dream big and set goals.” 

The Department was strongly represented in the STEM Educator of the Year (Schools) category. 

Burrendah Primary School Science Specialist Rebecca Knight was recognised for making science meaningful, hands-on and accessible to students through engaging investigations and real-world STEM programs. 

John Curtin College of the Arts Director of Technologies Timothy Rowberry was recognised for his work across space science, health science and regional STEM education, including programs connecting metropolitan, regional and Aboriginal students with real-world innovation.
