Education in Perth

An education at a Western Australian government school will give your child the best education possible because children are at the centre of everything we do.

We want every child in our schools to succeed, whatever their ability, wherever they live, whatever their background. Our schools are led by principals and teachers who want the best for your child. They encourage them to achieve their potential and ensure they are cared for and supported to succeed.

Western Australian government schools run from late January to mid-December and the school year is divided into 4 terms. Our schools offer a full curriculum and a range of programs designed to inspire children to be lifelong learners.

Pastoral care

Our teachers encourage and support everyone to perform at their best. Our schools are places where everyone feels they belong, are understood, cared for and are supported to succeed.

School staff work to develop well-rounded students who succeed at school, are happy and well-adjusted, and respect others.

Effective pastoral care in our schools is underpinned by a positive school environment where teachers:

  • get to know their students – their interests, their hopes, their vulnerabilities and their strengths
  • listen to their students and observe them so they can identify any issues that are troubling them or affecting their learning and development
  • create a sense of belonging in every single one of their students. They provide each student with a sense of security, making them feel accepted and included.
Reporting on student achievement

Student achievement and progress are monitored and reported throughout the school year.

You will receive a formal report on your child’s progress twice a year, at the end of each semester. This report includes details of academic achievement.

You can monitor your children’s achievements online through Connect Classrooms. This program allows parents to access assessment results and a range of resources, as well as receive school news.

Kindergarten to Year 6

Primary schools focus on the learning and development of students from the start of their schooling through to early adolescence.

In primary school, your child will be taught by teachers who are trained to motivate and build confidence in students.

Our teachers are passionate about inspiring young students to want to learn. They establish innovative approaches, nurture children and work hard to make sure each child thrives at school.

Students have the same teacher for most of the day. Some schools may also have specialist teachers for subjects such as music, art, physical education and languages other than English.

Junior secondary – Years 7 to 10

Junior secondary education continues to build on the learnings taught in primary school.

Secondary schools drive high-quality teaching practice in every classroom to benefit students. They challenge and support students to achieve success and forge their place in the world.

Students can study:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • humanities and social science
  • the arts
  • languages
  • health and physical education
  • technologies.

A range of special programs is also available. Our schools ignite a passion for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and provide opportunities for students to build STEM capabilities. Through STEM, students engage creatively in real-world problems, apply their understanding of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in integrated and innovative ways. Creative and performing arts courses are also available. These programs provide excellent learning opportunities for students to explore their creativity.

Senior secondary – Years 11 to 12

Senior secondary school allows students to complete the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE).

Students can select subjects that reflect their strengths and interests to ensure they achieve their best, and graduate with the skills and qualifications to move on to their career of choice.

Different subject choices are available for different educational pathways such as university, further training or employment.
