Conditions of entry

The WA Education Awards recognise people working in Western Australian public schools. Teachers, principals and school support staff are eligible to be nominated for the awards.

Nominations can only be submitted by Department of Education staff and presidents of school boards/councils and parent and citizen’s associations. Students and individual parents are not eligible to submit a nomination.

To be considered for an award the following conditions of entry must be met:

  1. Nominations must be submitted online via the online nomination portal by 5.00pm on Friday 28 July 2017.
  2. Nominations must be completed on the nomination template for the specific category.
  3. All sections of the nomination must be completed.
  4. All nominations for WA Primary Principal of the Year, WA Secondary Principal of the Year, WA Primary School of the Year, WA Secondary School of the Year and WA Premier’s Excellence in Aboriginal Education Award must be endorsed by the regional executive director. This includes nominations from Independent Public Schools, where the regional executive director is acting under the authority of the Director General. The principal can endorse all other nominations for individuals in all other categories.
  5. For all teacher and support staff awards, nominated staff must read the nomination, including the statement against selection criteria to signify their agreement to being involved in the awards. These nominations must be no more than three A4 pages using the template provided on this website and written in size 11 Arial font.
  6. For the primary and secondary principal awards, nominations must be endorsed by the principal, chair of the board/council, nominator (if not from the board/council) and regional executive director. The written statement must be written in size 11 Arial font and be no longer than one page.
  7. For the primary and secondary school awards, and the WA Premier’s Excellence in Aboriginal Education Award, nominations must be endorsed by the principal, chair of the board/council, nominator (if not from the principal or board/council) and regional executive director. The written statement must be written in size 11 Arial font and be no longer than two pages.
  8. All finalists must agree to be present at their school for the site visit to be conducted by the judges who will visit each finalist to speak with them, school staff, students, parents and referees to help determine winners.
  9. By entering the awards, staff and schools agree for their photographs, profiles and other details to be used for promotional purposes by the Department of Education and Western Australian Government.
  10. All staff award winners must agree to be ambassadors in promoting the awards and their profession.
  11. Nominees expecting to retire before the end of December 2018, or those taking extended periods of leave during 2017 and 2018, must disclose this at the time of nomination. These nominees may not be put forward for the selection of finalists and winners.
  12. All staff being nominated must be working in the school and position they are being nominated for at the time the nomination is lodged, with reasonable belief they will be in the role during 2017 and 2018. Principals currently undertaking leadership roles in central and regional offices and who have the reasonable belief they will return to their schools during 2017 or 2018, are also eligible.
  13. Once nominations are submitted, all staff nominations will be subject to further endorsement by Corporate Executive and Standards and Integrity. The Department may refuse to proceed with a nomination at any time where a nominee is under investigation or has unresolved issues with the Department or another government agency.
  14. Judges will not assess nominations over the specified page limits.
  15. Winners will be announced on Friday 24 November 2017 at a presentation dinner at Crown Perth. Finalists will receive an invitation to attend this event. Finalists must attend this event to remain eligible.
  16. Travel and accommodation expenses (for one night) will be met for finalists to travel from regional locations for the presentation event. Travel and accommodation expenses will not be met for their guests, principals or regional executive directors.
  17. All nominees must agree to abide by the decisions of the judging panels and no appeals will be entered into.
  18. Due to the number of entries and the capacity of judging panels, no feedback will be provided on nominations submitted.

Conditions of prize money expenditure

Staff award winners must allocate half of their prize money to cover professional development. This may include course costs, travel, accommodation and leave to undertake a professional learning activity.

School award winner prize money may be allocated towards implementing programs in the school, professional development for staff, student resources, and other suitable activities.

The following conditions of expenditure apply to all award winners:

  1. All professional development must be completed within the following calendar year.
  2. Winners will be required to complete a form detailing the professional development they will undertake as well as the aims and expected outcomes.
  3. Winners must consult with the Institute for Professional Learning when developing their professional development proposals.
  4. Winners are required to submit a report detailing the outcomes of their professional development within one month of having completed the professional development.
