The start of the school year is special for students and their families and I welcome all those starting at the 809 public schools in Western Australia for the first time as well as those returning after the holiday period.
A range of new schools has opened this year giving families in rapidly growing areas more opportunities for their children’s education.
Secondary schools of Fremantle College, Yanchep Secondary College and Aveley Secondary College have opened and primary schools at Rapids Landing, Wellard, Aveley North, Aspiri, Oakwood, Southern Grove and Yanchep Lagoon also opened.
All have outstanding facilities and staff to give children the very best education. There is more about our new schools on our Facebook page and on our website.
I was pleased with the success of our Year 12 students who graduated at the end of last year. The Beazley Medals for both WACE and VET were won by our students.
There was also a record number of our students getting perfect ATAR scores and others joining the 99 Club. Many students won School Curriculum and Standards Authority awards while others achieved their dreams of going to university, further training or getting jobs.
This year, 233 of our schools will be going online for NAPLAN. The WA Curriculum continues to be expanded with languages for Year 3 students, the arts and technologies to be implemented this year, including reporting achievement standards to parents.
We also have the next Australian Early Development Census in Term 2. School and community results, along with other school data, will help inform school planning, early intervention and transition to school programs for young children.
I wish students and their families the very best for 2018 and look forward to visiting many schools during the year to see first-hand the work happening in classrooms across our State.
