Buzz of excitement for Day One

 | 31 January 2018

School bags packed, uniforms on and close to 305,000 public school students have gone back to school this morning to start the 2018 school year.

Some students are the first to sit in classrooms at six brand new primary schools and to walk the grounds of three new secondary schools opening today – boosting the total number of public schools in WA to 809.

Others will be settling in to new, world-class facilities, like the recently completed classroom building at Highgate Primary School which is designed to ‘teach’ the students it houses.

Principal Stephen Ivey said the inner city school was a buzz of excitement this morning as he welcomed students and families who walked the school’s ‘red carpet’.

“Our students are our stars, they are our ‘VIP’s’. We had a red carpet painted at the entrance to our school, between the old and new buildings,” he said.

The new two-story classroom building is designed around the school’s original 1895 buildings and with education at its core.

“There are so many amazing aspects of the building that teach and inspire students as they move around it,” Mr Ivey explained.

“Lights in the roof of the first floor are laid out as a compass and each classroom is painted in bright colours to reflect the six Noongar seasons.

“One of the gutters runs into a garden bed which turns into a creek when it rains, and there’s a tree that grows in a void in the middle of the building that opens up to the sky.

The state-of-the-art building houses early childhood classes and one of the school’s Intensive Language Centre classes.

“We’ll all enjoy the second-floor balcony which looks out over our school ovals and provides a stunning view of the Perth city skyline,” Mr Ivey said.

New schools opening today:
Rapids Landing Primary School in Margaret River and Wellard Primary School in Perth’s southern suburbs have opened today, for students from Kindergarten to Year 6.

Aspiri Primary School, Aveley North Primary School, Oakwood Primary School and Southern Grove Primary School have opened for Kindergarten and Pre-primary students.

Yanchep Secondary College (Years 7 to 11), Aveley Secondary College (Year 7) and Fremantle College (Years 7 to 12) will open with state-of-the-art facilities for students.
