“I am passionate about excellence in the public school system.”

Mitch Mackay

Principal, John Curtin College of the Arts

Mitch has been principal of John Curtin College of the Arts for the last 12 years and led its transformation to the only fully selective arts school in Western Australia. Under his strong leadership and clear direction, the school has continually demonstrated improvement in students’ academic performance.

His previous roles include acting assistant regional executive director for the south metropolitan region, principal of Rossmoyne Senior High School and Leeming Senior High School, and manager of operations for Fremantle-Peel.

In his change project, Mitch looked at how using data can enhance teaching excellence, school improvement and predictive planning. He examined ways of using existing tools and creating new data sets to support school leaders as they work with teachers to add value to each student’s progress. He explored ways of using NAPLAN data to support decisions about ATAR participation, and to predict expected performance of students to inform intervention and support strategies.
