In May 2016, 20 principals started the 2016–2017 program with a one day Alumni Conference in Perth. The day included a live cross with Harvard University staff as an introduction to the summer school component in the United States.
In July, the principals, accompanied by the Director General, travelled to Boston and participated in a seven day program of intensive world-class leadership development delivered by a range of pre-eminent international educators, researchers and practitioners.
The program brought together school leaders from across the globe and was characterised by exceptional speakers of international renown.
Speakers included developmental psychologist Howard Gardner, the Hobbs Professor of Cognition and Education; and economist Thomas Kane, the Gale Professor of Education – both from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. There were many other speakers who inspired, challenged and enabled principals to reflect on their own leadership and on system leadership.
The specifically designed experience provided principals with an evolving picture of strategic leadership from a deep understanding of vision and purpose through to developing positive cultures, engaging families, managing change and identifying high quality classroom practice.
