National recognition for WA schools

Western Australian public schools are shining bright on the national stage after being named finalists in the Australian Education Awards 2023.

Marble Bar Primary School, Ashdale Secondary College, South Thornlie Primary School and Joseph Banks Secondary College are finalists across a range of whole-school categories, while Joseph Banks Secondary College teacher Matthew Meinema is in the running for Secondary School Teacher of the Year – Government.

The Australian Education Awards showcase the top-performing schools, principals, department heads and teachers for their outstanding achievements and work that makes a profound difference to the lives of young people across Australia.

Joseph Banks Secondary College is a finalist for Best Professional Learning Program and Best Student Wellbeing Program.

Science teacher Matthew Meinema who is a finalist for the Secondary School Teacher of the Year – Government said he was humbled by the national nomination.

“To be recognised by my peers at Joseph Banks Secondary College and highly experienced individuals in the Australian education community for the work I have done over the past six years is an honour,” he said.

“This recognition will drive me to continue working with my peers, community and most importantly my students.”

Ashdale Secondary College is in the running for Secondary School of the Year – Government. Principal Jacquie Bogunovich said she was incredibly honoured and thrilled to be recognised for the school’s dedication and commitment to education. 

“This achievement is a testament to our consistently high standards of teaching and our unwavering focus on fostering the holistic development of our students,” she said. 

“It fills us with immense pride and gratitude. It motivates us to continue striving for excellence in education, inspiring our students to reach their full potential and positively impacting their lives and the wider community.”

South Thornlie Primary School is a finalist in the Best Student Wellbeing Program category.

Principal Megan Barnett said it was wonderful for the school to be highlighted.

“We are excited about our school and community partnerships and the difference it makes for the students and their families,” she said.

Marble Bar Primary School was recognised in the Best First Nations Education Program and the Best STEM Program categories for its Virtual Worlds initiative which involves teaching and learning programs combining First Nations Culture with STEM.

The winners of the Australian Education Awards 2023 will be announced at an event in Sydney on Friday 11 August 2023.
