“I think the strategies primary teachers use, work really well in a secondary context”

Samantha began her career as a primary teacher and decided to do a Leap course in secondary English after accepting a role as a literacy specialist, “I had to teach from Year four, all the way through to Year 12. I chose to do a Leap course because I needed to know and understand more about how a secondary classroom runs.”

Sam said she recommends primary teachers considering secondary teaching to go for it. “I bring with me a lot of skills that perhaps somebody in secondary might not have, I can teach children how to read, I understand where kids start, all the way through to where they end up. Any kind of knowledge like that is powerful and I think primary teachers, even the strategies that they use work really well in a secondary context.”
