“My focus is on building relationships that add value to every student during their secondary schooling.”

Cheryl Townsend

Principal, Ballajura Community College

Cheryl has built a shared vision for the school based on a sense of unity and purpose by providing credible, purposeful and educational leadership. She mentors and supports staff, and provides leadership and development opportunities for them. She ensures staff use and understand data to inform their planning. The school has experienced significant increases in student achievement and progress since she became principal in 2013.

Cheryl is one of just two Teach for Australia principal ambassadors in WA and is also part of a network of 13 principals across Australia. As a network principal, she has led a mathematics transition project to improve student numeracy from Kindergarten to Year 12.

Cheryl’s change project reflected her interest in mathematics. She worked with local schools to improve pedagogy in the mathematics learning area, especially for students transitioning from primary to secondary school.
