School Camps COVID-19 Assistance Program

School Camps COVID-19 Assistance Program

Under the School Camps COVID-19 Assistance Program eligible third-party camp operators can apply for a reimbursement grant.

The Western Australian Safe Return to School Plan announced on 25 January 2022 introduced baseline measures to limit the risk of transmission of COVID-19 in schools. On 7 February 2022, based on advice from the Chief Health Officer, additional measures were announced to keep schools operating safely in a high caseload environment.

On advice of the Chief Health Officer, school camps are to be postponed or cancelled from 8 February 2022.

As a result, a School Camps COVID-19 Assistance Program has been established. This program provides financial support to third-party camp providers who have experienced financial loss as a result of cancellations of school camps from public, private and independent schools.

Round one opened on 11 February 2022 and closed 8 April 2022.

On 20 April 2022, on the advice of the Chief Health Officer, school camps are no longer postponed and can recommence from Term 2, 2022.

Although school camps are no longer postponed, the State Government, through the Department of Education, will conduct round two of the School Camps COVID-19 Assistance Program to provide financial assistance to eligible applicants for camps that have been cancelled up until Week 2 of Term 2.

Round two will be open from 20 April to 6 May 2022. The eligibility period for round two will be from 9 April to 6 May 2022, incorporating school camps that were scheduled in the April school holidays.

Any extensions to the eligibility or opening period will be dependent on advice from the Chief Health Officer.

Round two eligible applicants include:

  • An owner of accommodation that is available to be booked for a school camp.
  • An operator who facilitates the entire multiday camp itinerary on behalf of the school.

Note: Daytime activities are not eligible for funding through this program.

Schools are able and encouraged to run day camps and incursions to support student learning.

Eligible applicants are expected to retain and pay staff on a pro-rated basis in proportion to the funding tiers detailed in the program guidelines.

Any remaining funds must be applied to operational expenses including but not limited to reimbursing subcontractors, insurance costs and equipment maintenance.

Non-government schools will not be reimbursed where the camp is owned and operated by the school or associated body.
