All students applying for Gifted and Talented Secondary Selective Entrance Programs must sit the Academic Selective Entrance Test (ASET).
Children applying for academic programs will be placed solely on the results of the ASET.
Children applying for arts programs will have to complete an audition/workshop in addition to the ASET. Some students will also be required to participate in an interview.
Children applying for languages programs may also have to participate in an interview. The ASET is made up of four components:
- reading comprehension
- communicating ideas in writing
- quantitative reasoning
- abstract reasoning.
The tests are designed specifically for Gifted and Talented Secondary Selective Entrance Programs and work to identify those students most suited to the programs.
A Candidate Information Bulletin (CIB), which details the test timings, required equipment and example questions will be published online late February 2020, prior to testing.
Tests are designed to identify potential, rather than acquired knowledge, and as such the Department of Education does not endorse any training or preparation prior to the test.
In lodging an application, parents acknowledge that they have read and accept the Applicant Guidelines and Key Dates and Timelines for the 2020 testing schedule.
Students with diagnosed learning difficulties
Parents of children with a diagnosed learning difficulty can apply for their child to sit the testing under special conditions. Special conditions usually include extra time and any other recommendations from their diagnosing Health Professional which link directly to their condition. Arts only academic testing exemption
Students with a diagnosed learning difficulty who are applying for arts programs only (not academic or languages), can apply for an exemption from sitting the Academic Selection Entrance Test (ASET). There is a process in place allowing for children currently residing overseas or interstate to sit the testing without travelling to Perth. The process involves a suitably qualified third-party invigilator (usually a teacher from the child’s current school) who can conduct the testing. The results of the ASET are released mid-May 2020 and are delivered as an Academic Performance Report. The reports show your child’s performance in each of the four test components, and their Total Standard Score (TSS), which is the score upon which they will be ranked for placement in academic programs.
Performance reports for arts and languages assessments are not provided. However feedback can be obtained by contacting the Gifted and Talented Selection Unit.
Formal offers of placement for all programs will commence in June 2020 and runs through two rounds.
Academic entrance scores vary each year. The following represents the minimum TSS derived from the ASET which resulted in an offer of placement for entry to individual academic programs for Year 7 in 2017, 2018 and 2019. As each cohort is different, these scores should be used as a guide only.

Academic remark request
Following the release of the Academic Performance Reports, parents can lodge an application to have their child’s test paper re-marked and checked for potential error. Re-mark application forms will be made available for download as soon as results are released. Parents can lodge an illness/misadventure appeal for their child if something occurred on the day of testing which they believe has affected their child’s results. Illness/misadventure forms will be available for download once testing commences. A dedicated panel will review all the information in conjunction with the child’s scores.
