Alternative pathways into teaching

Alternative pathways into teaching

There is more than one way to become a teacher.

Universities provide several different entry points to enable and encourage people to take the first step towards a future career in teaching. These include:

  • using TAFE or other qualifications to meet entry requirements
  • a bridging course or accelerated entry program
  • studying a postgraduate qualification in addition to your undergraduate degree
  • completing the Teach For Australia Leadership Development Program.

Curtin University has a range of enabling courses and alternative entry pathways which can help you qualify for entry into a range of different teaching courses.

Murdoch University has a range of enabling pathway courses with teaching as a study area including OnTrack Flex, FlexiTrack and OnTrack. Students also have the option to complete the support unit to transition in to a Bachelor of Education.

Notre Dame University's Tertiary Pathways Program (TPP) is an alternate pathway for students who have not met the requirements for entry in to an undergraduate course. The program is offered in-person or via a virtual classroom setting and successful completion may allow students direct entry in to undergraduate Education courses.

UWA's offers a range of alternative pathways including Special Tertiary Admissions Test Pathway, Diploma Entry Pathway and Mature-age Access Program.

ECU's UniPrep pathway provides bridging courses that enables students to apply for entry to a range of different and flexible course options.

Teach For Australia’s Leadership Development Program is an employment-based pathway into secondary teaching, targeting high-performing candidates from other fields.

As part of the 2-year program, associates achieve their Master of Teaching while working as classroom teachers, in the regions and schools where they are most needed. Associates have a reduced teaching load and time for study and professional development. Additional support is provided through a school mentor, academic advisor and a teaching and leadership coach.

To be eligible to apply, you need to hold a Bachelor's degree in a discipline other than education. Find out how to apply from Teach For Australia.
