"Chatting with students and learning their stories, and building their self-confidence by helping them realise what they can do, are two of the things I love most about teaching."

Mathematics and Science Teacher, Roebourne District High School. Finalist, WA Beginning Teacher of the Year 2016.

Steven studied Bachelor of Science and Graduate Diploma of Education at University of Western Australia.

"After studying Maths and Astrophysics at university I took a year off and taught English, music and drama in China. I had always intended to go back to university to do my Masters, but it was during my year in China that I discovered how much I loved helping people learn and decided to become a teacher.

"I am now in my second year of teaching with the Department of Education at Roebourne District High School. As the only maths and science teacher at the school, I use these subjects as a medium to engage students, build strong relationships with them and assist them in learning about the things that are important to them.

"Our school has recently implemented a project-based learning approach and our first topic for the year is Caring for our Elders.  This topic was chosen by a group of our student leaders. Lessons are centred on caring for elders by respecting and implementing the knowledge that they share with us.  At the end of the project, students will present what they have done to the community.

"My job is much more about learning than it is about knowing. Chatting with students and learning their stories, and building their self-confidence by helping them realise what they can do, are two of the things I love most about teaching."
